TIME FOR A REALITY CHECK
Powered nearfield monitor speakers built on the success of its legendary predecessors that have become a genuine industry standard for their accuracy.
Sound Philosophy of HS Series Studio Monitors
When selecting studio reference monitors for mixing and music production, one consideration takes precedence above all others – accuracy. Beginning with the legendary NS-10M, and continuing with the MSP and previous HS Series, this new lineup shares a design philosophy that emphasizes sonic purity without any coloring or alternation of the original sound. While many manufacturers seek to enhance the sound of their monitors to make them sound impressive, Yamaha studio monitors are designed to achieve the best possible mix by ensuring that the sound from your speakers is true to the original. HS Series nearfield reference monitors are the embodiment of this philosophy, delivering a concise sound image, high resolution, and flat response.

Newly Developed Transducers
Improving on the success of the original HS line launched in 2006, the completely redesigned HS series feature new transducers that achieve smooth response over a wide bandwidth and ensure the accuracy of signal reproduction throughout the audio spectrum. By upgrading to a 1″ tweeter (from the previous ¾” models) the new monitor series provides an extended frequency range and deliver superb high-resolution sound. Yamaha engineers have optimized the HS powered monitor and subwoofer monitor system for a variety of music production environments.

High Performance Amp Unit
HS Series speakers employ an amplifier unit perfectly matched to the transducers utilized in each model of the series. Featuring a bi-amp design with a separate dedicated amp for both the woofer and the tweeter, this amplifier unit ensures that each HS Series speaker consistently delivers high-resolution sound with exceptionally flat response across the sound spectrum.

Low Resonance Enclosure Design
HS Series cabinets are designed to eliminate unwanted resonance and increase the accuracy of sound reproduction to their extreme limit. The enclosures are constructed from a very dense and resilient MDF with a damped acoustic response that is perfectly suited for reference monitors. Drawing from Yamaha’s over 100 years of piano design experience, HS Series engineers also employed a traditional three-way mitered-joint technique. Common to architectural design this construction firmly anchors the corners of the enclosure to dramatically improve durability and eliminate unwanted resonance that can influence overall sound.

Cutting Edge Noise Reduction Technology
Speaker port design can greatly influence the clarity of overall sound. Often a vortex at the either end of the port can generate air vibrations inside of the port, causing unwanted noise. By adopting an advanced noise reduction technology that incorporates a thorough analysis of a visual representation of the sound, Yamaha’s engineers are able to control and reduce the vortex. Through this in-depth analysis we have arrived at the ideal port design, resulting in a reduction of audible noise up to 6dB. The utilization of this state-of-the-art technology allows HS Series studio monitors to meet the demands of more strict professional production environments.

Controls and Connectivity
ROOM CONTROL allows you to attenuate the unnatural, exaggerated low-end that can often occur when speakers are placed next to walls, while HIGH TRIM allows for more flexible control of high frequency response. For inputs, HS full-range speakers can accommodate a wide range of balanced and unbalanced sources such as mixers, keyboards and audio interfaces with XLR and TRS phone jacks. With the HS8S subwoofer, HIGH CUT control sets the cutoff frequency of subwoofer output high-frequency attenuation from 80Hz to 120Hz, while PHASE switch adjusts the phase of the subwoofer output. The LOW CUT switch and LOW CUT controls enables attenuation of low frequencies for output between 80Hz and 120Hz. The HS8S subwoofer is equipped with XLR and TRS phone jack inputs and for outputs XLR for L and R and EXT SUB out.

Yamaha HS Series Studio Monitors Now in White
White versions of the 5″ HS5 W, 6.5″ HS7 W and 8″ HS8 W provide users with a broad range of monitors that can adapt to a wider variety of music production environments and aesthetics.

![]() Amazing Keyboard Monitor!, By
This review is from: Yamaha HS8 Studio Monitor, Black (Electronics)
Here’s something I never would have expected at this price point. I have a reasonably good pair of Sony headphones. When I toggle between the headphones and the speakers, the sound actually cleaned up slightly. I’m driving these with a Focusrite 6i6 interface box off my PC and my Jupiter 80 keyboard.
The high’s and mids are very clean and punchy. I will probably add the HS8S subwoofer at some point. The bass is thick down into the lower registers of what you can hear but it’s missing the foundation that the basement frequencies bring. This is not the top shelf home audio stuff you may or may not be familiar with but it’s at about 1/10 the cost. Although I’d be hard pressed to say where it loses it in the sound quality, it can leave your ears sore after playing it loud for an prolonged period. Perhaps this makes it safer than my home theater system or perhaps it means I need to work on the room balance. But these are great monitors that will bring out sound details you probably have not heard on your favorite music. As for use with a Keyboard, they are superb. For kicks I was learning Bach’s Toccata and Fugue. I had thought there was something weak with my pipe organ patch since I couldn’t get it to sound right in one particular section. When I played it with the HS8’s I finally heard what I was missing. Similarly when playing phatter patches for rock leads, baselines, or funk, the keyboard stood out more than ever. It was like I just upgraded my keyboard to a professional grade. 0

![]() Clean Monitors and do not color or saturate.,

Possibly the best for the price. You can’t get better medium sized room monitors. The bass response is good enough for hip-hop production but will not register certain super deep frequencies. That being said, there are very few songs that have a lot of the groove below 43hz. Trust me, you won’t need a sub with these speakers unless you are producing orchestrations or are in a larger room! Very clean and are amazing for referencing. You can hear all the litttle details and really tell the difference between a good mix and a bad one. Enjoy these bad boys!

In with the… well u get it.
These things are amazing. I’ve mixed with pro headphones before but never on monitors. wait, real monitors lol. I used to mix between headphones and regular cpu speakers then later run to the car to compare. I still do the same now but subsequent changes (if any) are not as drastic and experimental. Like many engineers say what u see is what u… well, you get the point lol Bottom Line crisp on the high end- perhaps to make up for bass issues if ur room is untreated. controls in the back let u dial in ur sound like mixing, but im going with factory setup right now. i need more time to find a real preference. Caution: watch out for phase effects and stuff when ur mixing. Rapid changes in high end will have ur ears ringing for a while. everything you need- sub is needed for club music. you will not hear anything below 50 – 60 hz with just monitors. perhaps u can get away with headphones, but if you have the money spend it. The subs are equally impressive as the monitors. amazing. final words you still have to grow and practice to become better, but these speakers provide a good foundation to get started. misc 0 |
