Rosewood thumb piano, 3″ x 5″, 8 steel keys. The thumb piano originates in Africa. It is also known as the mbira or likembe. The metal keys are mounted on a wooden box that acts as the resonating chamber. Longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches. The keys can be adjusted by tapping them in or out to adjust their pitch. Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference. Similar tuning is only an issue when two instruments are played together; then they should generally agree in tuning.

This thumb piano (aka “kalimba”) has a nice sound but, like all such instruments, needed tuning before we could play it. Unfortunately, the two screws that hold the key bar down were turned so tightly by the manufacturer that the slots on the screw heads began to strip before I could get them loosened. Only by dint of careful (but forceful) work could I finally get them to move. I had to replace both screws with new ones after I finally got them out. The screws on the tuning bar need to be firm, but not torqued down so tightly that they present this problem. The instrument works fine now, but we were about ready to return it at one point due to this issue.

I bought 2 of these for Christmas presents. It was nice to buy a unique gift. My family loved them. Worth the money. Great for those who love musical instruments of all kinds.

This thumb piano is a nice size for small children. I have purchased it for my 5-year-old son. It is a Christmas gift, so he has not seen it yet. I was a little disappointed with the sound quality… not as “clear” as others I have heard, although it is adjustable. I have not tried to tune it. I think my son will enjoy it as it is a fun, simple way to create melodies.
