The MEINL African Talking Drums are carved into an hourglass shape from a solid piece of Mahogany wood, and decorated with a carved motif. Two hand-selected goatskin heads are spanned with high-quality nylon rope. Traditionally, the talking drum is played beneath one arm, and held against the ribcage. The drum is then squeezed to “bend” the pitch while the other hand employs a curved striker.

This product is beyond my expectation in quality.I love it! I love talking drums, not just for its decorative use, but the sounds it produces fascinates me a lot. As a yoruba man from Nigeria, I had imagined that such product cannot be manufactured by people other than Nigerians, but this product proved me wrong and blew me away! I just love my talking drum and hope to purchase a bigger one very soon from this same makers. The cost and delivery was awesome and precise too, especially when compared with people that makes the same product to sell at so high a price and yet the quality of their product cannot march this one.

I bought this drum because of its style. The drum is very nice looking aesthetically but the heads are thin and look synthetic. It arrived damaged and I was glad that it was, because this gave me a reason to return it. The drum came in a plain cardboard box containing no padding and no packing slip. The side of the box where the drum was damaged was crushed. It came by USPS. The way the ropes that tune the heads, are placed in the heads, is a very poor design and after seeing this I was sorry that I had originally bought it. The tuning system is a problem waiting to happen in terms of ripping the thin head apart should pressure ever be applied to the ropes. It looked like this is what had happened in shipping. Something put pressure on one side of the shipping box which pushed on the tuning ropes and they ripped the head apart. If you compare this drum’s structure to other talking drums made by other companies you will see what I mean about the structure of the tuning system as it relates to the drum head. I think this drum has only the quality of a toy and could never be used as a real instrument. It only cost dollars. I guess I should not have expected more however I do have a Meinl aluminum Darbuka that works just fine. On the other hand I also have Meinl cymbals that are marginal in terms of sound. Again, they look good, but their function is not great. So, I would not recommend this drum to be used as a real instrument. However, if you just want to look at it sitting on your mantle, it looks really cool.
