This series of Weiss Volumes recorded by Barto is an auspicious and venerable project.
The sound engineering is superbly conceived in a live space that shines just the right amount of definition and proximity to the Lute and its thorny technical challenges. The result is a combination of richly complex detail and warm sustain that breathes with the music. What emerges here, is a highly intelligent player at the service of the music and its powerful structural breadth. Barto conveys Weiss’ highly stylized counterpoint with clarity and deep emotion, placing the music at the center of this beautiful recording. 0

Robert Barto’s 10th issue of his Weiss recordings is not different from the previous ones. Outstanding musicianship combined with one of the era’s most prolific composers is bound to yield a treasured recording. Weiss has become one of my most listened to composers over the last ten years due to Barto’s efforts. The compositions are beautiful, complex and mesmerizing as I find myself listening to them for hours on end. Highly recommended in companionship with the other ten Weiss recordings as well as the one of Hagen issued in the late 90s Hagen: Lute Sonatas / Locatelli Variations. If you are fond of the lute and the baroque you simply have to listen to Barto’s work. I must admit that I am slightly envious of a person encountering Barto/Weiss for the first time. 🙂 Enjoy!
