![]() Great Clarinet, By

This is a great instrument. The sound is great, it can even hold its own against some of the lower end Buffets. It even feels like a Buffet! The keys sit perfectly on the horn, and they are very sturdy. The only adjustment I had to make was to the crow’s foot so it would close the low F/ C tone hole when the low E/ B key was pressed. The case had the logo glued on in the wrong place, but that certainly does not affect the performance of the instrument, and certainly the audience won’t care! Of course, the stock ligature and stock reed (never thought I’d say “stock reed” before) are total crap, but the stock mouthpiece has some potential, with a good reed and ligature, of course. The brushed finish is also a nice touch. The body of the instrument looks like wood, which is a nice change from those shiny plastic horns I’ve seen.

We bought this for my son, but he said he felt it was out of tune when he played certain notes, like the G and A. But I tried it and put a tuner next to it, and it was basically OK. It was just hard for him. (I played in high school.) He really didn’t like it so we sent it back. A couple of other negatives I had were that it was extremely hard to put together. The pieces were too tight. And the case was pretty cheap. The logo was not glued on in the hole where it was supposed to be, the two fasteners were thin and not very sturdy, and the rest was cheap plastic. You could always buy another case for about 50-60 bucks, but then why pay almost as much for a case as for the clarinet? I also thought the keys seemed a little fragile for what I would expect in a clarinet. So in general, it was cheap, but playable, but I think it’s better to pay more and get something better.
