I work on a lot of amplifiers and hear a lot of different speakers. I often recommend the Cannabis Rex, especially to blues and jazz players. I tell them, "It couldn’t make a harsh note if it tried." The hemp fibers lend a certain smoothness to the tone and take the edge of the highs without muffling them. I especially like the low end tone, which handles clean and overdriven tones gracefully. It’s full, without being forceful or explicitly bassy. If you want a harder-edged sound, the Eminence Wizard’s response profile is nearly identical, but a couple of dB louder. The Wizard’s magnet is larger, however, and it’s a heavier speaker.

I purchased the Cannabis Rex 12″ speaker in July, 2012. Five months later I have finally gotten around to installing it in my Fender Blues Jr. The installation was easy with the most difficult part being putting the amp cabinet back together with the new speaker installed. I have only played through The BJ with the new speaker in it for about three hours at this point. The Cannabis Rex is not yet broken in. New speakers typically take as many as 20-30 hours of playing time before they fully blossom into their true tone. However, right away I noticed that the amp is louder. This makes sense because the Rex is very efficient. The tone already differs from that of the stock BJ speaker. The Cannabis Rex gets its name from its hemp cone. Hemp fibers strengthen the cone and impart a different sound than typical paper cones. This speaker, even though it is loud, is not harsh-sounding at all. It’s tone is well-balanced bottom to top. Bass notes are round and full. The Rex’s top end is very sweet-sounding with enough sparkle and shimmer to be pleasing without dominating the overall tone. My assumption is that these qualities will be even more clearly evident when the speaker is fully loosened up. Amazon’s low cost (the lowest I could find) made the Cannabis Rex a good buy and a cost-effective upgrade to my amplifier.

This is a great speaker. The Cannabis Rex is a warm clean speaker, with nice bright highs, plus lots of fullness and low end.
I build amps and effects pedals. I built a late-1950s style tube amp with tremolo, and had an Eminence Fender OEM speaker in it, and the amp had a bright clean, chimey sound to it, very open and vintage sounding. The C-Rex is not very vintage sounding; it’s loud and full. It was like getting a whole new amp. Instead and bright and chimey, the amp now sounds noticeably louder and has a much fuller tone. Lots mor mids, lower mids, and bottom end while still having nice crisp highs. It certainly thickened up the tone and made the amp louder. I play a Fender Telecaster and I still have that Tele twang, and after I lowered the pickups on the bass side, I have a great, rich tone all across the spectrum. The low notes are rich, and the high notes are clear, and the mids are right there in the middle where they belong. If you want a loud speaker, and if you want a speaker that gives a loud, full, thick tone with crisp highs, this is it. 0 |
