12 Hole Ocarina From the Legend of Zelda

This brand new 12-hole tenor ocarina is about 5.5 inches wide, accurately tuned in the key of C Major, with a pitch range of more than an octave and half (13 notes). It also has the capability of performing sharps and flats. It comes with an online instructional booklet, as well as a strap, so you can wear this ocarina on your neck wherever you go.

We have included a protective bag and a Zelda Songbook for free.

A great gift for any Zelda fan, December 10, 2008
By
scpd (Ohio) – See all my reviews

This review is from: 12 Hole Ocarina From the Legend of Zelda
I purchased this awhile ago from STL ocarinas, a site which makes many different kinds of ocarinas. This one is a tenor ocarina in C (concert pitch), made of blue-stained ceramic. It has a written range of A3 to F5 *including flats and sharps* It sounds one octave higher than written, so the tonal range is from A4 (above middle C on the piano) to F6. The “Ocarina of Time” is a tenor and this replica covers most of the tonal range.
Just a few comparisons before I go on:
-The lowest note in the “Serenade of Water” (A button on the N64 controller) is the low C on this ocarina. The lowest note the instrument can play is the A below that.
-The ocarina cannot play the top note in the “Sun’s Song”, but comes close.

***Technical stuff***

There are 12 holes on the instrument. Two are for the thumbs, then there are five for each hand. The fingering scheme takes awhile to get used to. Low A, B-flat, B, and C# require covering one or both of two very small holes above the middle finger on each hand. These notes can hardly be played in anything but a slow passage. This problem can be fixed with the C# if you play a C and blow faster air, bringing the pitch up. It’s not perfect, but it works. The fingering for low Eb given by STL uses this small hole, but your life will be much easier if you use these variations instead:
Eb: X-XXXX X-XXOX (basic) OR X-OXXX X-XXXX (slightly brigher)

And this fingering may help for low F natural if it consistently plays flat: X-XXOX X-XXXO

X- refers to the thumbs, X means the hole is covered, and O means the hole is open.

One thing I really like is that it’s easy to make up fingerings depending on the piece. Instead of the basic fingerings for notes, I’ve found quite a few alternates that work well to make the ocarina sound darker, more mellow, brighter, etc.

The higher notes are difficult to play because as you get higher you will have to lift your thumbs off of the tone holes on the bottom (high D through high F), and it becomes difficult to hold the instrument. Starting at high D, you can cover the right tone hole of your right hand with your pinky to brace the instrument. These high notes also have a tendency to play flat or not come out at all, in which case you may have to bob your head or change the position of the instrument to get the notes out (something which is explained in a very helpful FAQ on STL’s website). Again, it’s not perfect but it’s necessary and it works. I play the instrument at a 45 degree angle to my left; that feels the most comfortable for me and helps me get all the notes out.

Ocarinas do require plenty of air, but not as much as the flute or piccolo. There isn’t much of an embouchure to worry about – you basically just blow into it.

Due to it’s warmer tone color I think this ocarina is meant more for soloistic playing.

********************

The ocarina comes with STL’s hand-made song book with many Zelda songs. The songs are written in a form of tablature (TAB) and a few are transposed for ease or to fit the notes within the range of the instrument. I found this book pretty useless since I can read music. For those of you who are tech savvy, I would recommend downloading MIDI files of the various Zelda songs and opening them in a program like Noteworthy Composer, Finale, or Sibelius. There are probably some free readers out there somewhere. Linux users can use (free) programs like Rosegarden and MuseScore.

The ocarina also comes with a neck strap that is threaded through the instrument. It’s annoying, but your only protection against dropping an piece of ceramic on the floor. A carrying case is also included.

The instructional booklet isn’t as helpful as the forums or videos on STL’s website, so go there for additional information.

Lastly, *DO NOT BUY THIS FOR CHILDREN*
Ceramic is durable but will break if you drop it on a hard floor. Plastic ocarinas don’t sound the greatest but they are very cheap and easy to replace if broken.

This makes a great gift for Zelda fans and musicians alike. Highly recommended.

Comment if you have questions! Last updated 8/13/11

UPDATE: STL has made improvements to their design of this ocarina. I have noticed that they have made the two small accidental holes larger, possibly to help with the pitch of the accidental notes. Just a guess.

Challenging, but I love it!, August 5, 2010

Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: 12 Hole Ocarina From the Legend of Zelda
Well, I got this first and foremost because I’m a huge Legend of Zelda fan, but I soon fell in love with the ocarina and how beautiful it can sound if played right. Once shipped, it came extremely quickly, within four days of placing the order, and the product itself looked exactly like the picture. If you would like to know what it sounds like, go to […], and find this ocarina under the Fans of Zelda tab, there’s a video there showing the ocarina being played.

I recieved the ocarina two hours ago, and already I can play three songs, albiet, not very well! But it’s a good start. Some of the finger positions can take some time getting used to if this is your first ocarina, as it is mine. I found the guide books helpful, if not slightly confusing at first. The first just teaches you the various notes, and the numbers assigned to them, and gives you a few simple songs such as Happy Birthday and Jingle Bells to learn. The second is the book with the zelda songs. Reading off the numbers if you never done so is the confusing part for myself, as I sometimes get certain notes mixed up. However, I am sure once I have a day or two to practice, they will become much easier. There are a wonderful amount of songs in the book. Again, if you would like to see what songs specifically, go to STLocarina’s main site, and go to the sheet music tab, find the Zelda book that comes with this ocarina and it will give a full list of the songs you will be getting.

Overall, I really enjoy this ocarina, and it is a great offer! And don’t give up if your notes/songs don’t sound the best at first, because even if it is relatively easy to play compared to some of the harder instruments, it still takes time and practice to learn how to make notes sound clear and precise.

It’s a joy to be able to play the songs that I’ve always loved in the game!

The only reason it’s 5* because there’s no 6*, July 14, 2011

This review is from: 12 Hole Ocarina From the Legend of Zelda
I’m not a professional at all. But for this ocarina, that is completely irrelevant. Though I’m not a professional, I’m certain I play quite well on this after just a couple of days! Just FYI, buy this on the stlocarina official site, it’s cheaper.

Pros;
It’s sinfully beautiful and looks almost like the Ocarina of Time. It’s made solid and tuned quite well. The manual that’s included with it helps a bit. Sounds wonderful! When you have proper breath control, it sounds even better. For adults, it should be easy to handle and to cover the holes. This is definitely not for kids though. Finally, it’s perfect for beginners and it’s able to take them into intermediary techniques at the very least. This ocarina is loud enough to not get drowned out by other instruments but it’s still soft enough to sound beautiful like I mentioned before.

Cons;
It MAY be fragile… I haven’t dropped it nor do I plan on it, so I can’t say for sure. You can start as a beginner but you will not be able to get better without learning proper breath control, which you will need to learn on your own (little breath on low notes, and more breath on high notes). Since it’s a 1 hole (where you blow into) ocarina, it is limited in the notes it can play, but it is still quite variable. This ocarina is very loud in enclosed spaces, so watch your ears! The only other con is this, it doesn’t look exactly like the ocarina in the game, which is a 7 hole ocarina (don’t know if there are another 2 thumb holes at the bottom) which is made by another company, but it doesn’t sound nearly as good as this one.

Other Comments;
Buy this on STLOcarina’s official website, they have sales and everything! I bought a package which included this ocarina, a carrying case, and a Zelda songbook! It was all with free shipping with any order over . If you start playing this and like it, it’ll be hard to stop, in fact you might want to buy a bunch of other of their ocarinas! Which include ocarina’s shaped like rupees!

And lastly, this instrument is easy to learn, difficult to master and even more rewarding! I’ve played the Market Theme and the Shop Theme at my local gamestop a bunch of times.
